Preparing Leaders

NAVIGATE:
Dr. Gary W. Davis, PhD, CAE

Gary Davis leads retreats. He leads by getting all the board members involved in the conversation. When a retreat led by Gary concludes three things have happened. First, the board knows the CEO's aspirations; second, the CEO understands what the board is worried about; and third the CEO and the board agree on next steps.

Gary's skills result from 35 years of association, church, community college and university leadership. Gary prepares for retreats by calling the board members to be certain that the retreat will meet their precise needs. He understands that every board is unique. His retreats produce relevant, detailed, time-sensitive "step-by-step lists” that make board work more rewarding. Within six weeks, Gary follows up by contacting the board chair and CEO to be sure that the retreat met the board's needs. Gary can provide more than 200 references. Samples of retreat evaluations also are available upon request.

Gary Davis’ clients include: The International Association for of Pharmacy Law, The Farm Resource Center, Illinois Electric Council, the Society of Chest Pain Centers, the Illinois Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Illinois Employees Association, the Association Forum of Chicagoland, The Illinois Community Behavioral Healthcare Association, the Illinois Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, the Illinois Career Institute, the Association of Community College Trustees, the American Association of Community Colleges and several state higher education associations.

Before coming to ICCTA, Gary was Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Board of Control at Saginaw Valley College (1983-86), Assistant Provost for Budget and Planning at Illinois State University (1981-83), and Professor of Humanities and Philosophy at Northwest Missouri State University (1970-81).

An adjunct professor in the University of Illinois at Springfield Department of Philosophy, Gary holds the Ph.D. in Religion and Ethics from the University of Iowa and has served as president of Gammlang, an Iowa-based agribusiness corporation. He earned his Certified Association Executive designation in 1991 and was elected to head the Illinois Society of Association Executives in 2002.
